Summary
Soapstone sculpture of a pagoda. Early 19th century, Chinese export. A white soapstone carved pagoda, nine storeys high on an octagonal base which has been carved with a lotus flower border. The lower section features a fretwork fence, two lions with gold decoration (facing outwards), five people and a decorative entrance inset with four green and three red stones. The entrance pillars are topped with round gilt finials, the fence is topped with plain round finials. Each storey features 6 small gilt bells (without clappers) and has a seated buddha figure inside, decreasing in size. The pagoda features pierced grills to form fences. The top of the pagoda has a gilt final with five chains hanging down to the roof below. Sitting on a wooden octagonal base covered in a blue and gold material. Displayed in a glass case which stands on a French Empire stand of burr walnut (534188.2). One of a pair with 534189.1-2.
