Summary
Oil painting on a bevelled panel, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765) as a Boy, wearing the Robes of the Order of Bath, after Joseph Highmore (London 1692 – Canterbury 1780). A portrait painted in an oval, the subject is facing the spectator, turned to right, his left arm and hand stretched out to the right. Dressed in long curly powdered hair, robes of Bath (dark pink/purple in colour with white trim and bow) over a blue jacket with white collar and cuffs. Small gilt wood frame with ornate, floral detail. Hanging from chains. On 18 May 1730 he was made a Knight of the Garter and was installed on 18 June. Presumably acquired by George Lucy, and thence by descent to his son's second daughter, Linda Lucy, Mrs?X, by whom left back to the Fairfax-Lucy descendants of her elder sister, Ada; on loan from Sir Edmund Fairfax-Lucy
