Summary
Oil painting on panel, Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603), English School, late 17th century. inscribed (later): Elizabetha: D. G. Ang. Franc et Hiber Regina. Fidei Defenatrix Posui Deum Adiutorem Meum [Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England, France and Ireland /Defender of the Faith I have made God my helper]. A three-quarter-length portrait of Queen Elizabeth, standing slightly right, looking to the right. She is wearing a jewelled headdress, large lace ruff, richly embroidered skirt, jewelled surcoat, a scent bottle encrusted with jewels in her left hand, in her right a miniature gieve inscribed with the motto: A terra il ben, mal dimorra in sella. The coat of arms in the top right corner is a later addition. A later 17th century over-painting of a 16th-century original.
