Summary
Oval oil painting on canvas, Maria Lane, Mrs John Hammond Lucy (1758-1844), by William Artaud (London 1763 - London 1823). An oval, half-length portrait of Maria Lane, she is seated towards the left. She is wearing a black dress with light white lace collar. Her dark hair is tied up with a black ribbon round. She holds a flower in her right hand. She sits in front of a large red curtain. The flower is cut by the edge of the picture and the composition is cramped and therefore may have been reduced form a rectangular canvas. The portrait is framed in a giltwood oval frame. Maria Lane was the daughter of John Lane of Bentley Hall, Staffordshire. She married the Reverend John Hammond Lucy in 1788. This painting is a companion to his portrait NT 533850.
