Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Catherine Wheatley, Mrs Thomas Lucy, later Duchess of Northumberland (d.1714), by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), 1680. A full-length portrait of Catherine Lucy, sitting in a landscape setting, positioned to the left with her head slightly right but maintaining a direct gaze with the spectator. She is wearing a white blouse with full sleeves, grey-green dress and a blue cloak with orange fringe. Her right hand rests on her lap while her left to hair, resting on her left shoulder. A small waterfall and Italianate buildings can be seen in the left background. Poppies and other flowers to her right. In a large giltwood carved frame. Catherine Lucy was the wife of Captain Thomas Lucy and daughter of Robert Wheatley of Bracknell, Berkshire. She married secondly in 1685 to George Fitzroy, Duke of Northumberland.
