Summary
An oak backstool, English, probably North Country, late 17th or early 18th century. An ogee-shaped toprail above a fielded and arched panelled back (probably lacking pendant finials). The rear uprights finial-topped. A solid seat composed of two panels. Straight back legs and turned and carved front legs and stretcher with plain side stretchers. 'WT' carved three times on the front of the chair back and 'W' (more faint) and 'WB' (partly gouged and above the arch). 'WT' carved twice on the reverse of the chair back and 'WB' and 'WT' (faintly) above the arch. These marks are probably inventory or ownership initials, or the marks of a turner. Heavily restored with spliced repairs to the uprights.
