Summary
Oil painting on panel, Terpsichore, the Muse of Dancing and Song, Italian (Lombard?), circa 1800. Neo-classical en grisaille female figure with Greek text inscription, dressed in classical robes, holding a small lyre in her left hand and plucking the strings with her right and standing on a plinth inscribed with Greek letters: ΜΕΛΠΟΜΣΝΝ. ΤΡΑΡ ΙΑΝ.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
