Oil painting on panel, Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy, Italian (Lombard)School, circa 1800. Neo-classical en grisaille female figure with Greek inscription, dressed in classical robes, holding a mask in her left hand and a club in her right hand and standing on a plinth inscribed with Greek letters: ΜΕΛΠΟΜΣΝΝ. ΤΡΑΡ ΙΑΝ.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
