Caption
Here the town and castle of Windsor are seen beneath a rather stormy sky and there are cows, sheep, a shepherd and a dog beneath trees in a meadow in the foreground. George Cole, son of Vicat Cole, painted portraits as well as landscapes and animals. He was self taught and began his career at Portsmouth making some studies of Wembwell's Travelling Menagerie and later went to Holland to study animal painting. In 1850 he was elected a Member of the Society of British Artists. .
