Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Distant View of Windsor from a Wood by Edmund Bristow (Eton 1787 – Eton 1876). Distant view of Windsor Castle seen above trees, figure of a lady with a red parasol, and deer in the Park in the foreground. This picture shows well the site that was chosen for the fortifications that became Windsor Castle: a prominent escarpment overlooking the River Thames, with extensive views of the surrounding countryside and steep, easily defended slopes to north, east and west.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
