Summary
Oil painting on panel, Queen Mary I (Mary Tudor) (1516–1558), after Antonis Mor (Utrecht 1519 – Antwerp 1575). A head-and-shoulders portrait, facing left, gazing at spectator, wearing a French hood edged with pearls and jewels a small white standing collar and a velvet red dress. Inscribed 'Mary I'. Label on frame 'Mary Tudor 1516-1558, daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon'. In many portraits of Mary I, she has the famous ‘Peregrina’ pearl, given to her at the time of her marriage, attached to the jewel that is shown round her neck in this version. The painting is after Mor, who came to England on Philip’s orders to paint a likeness of Mary. The predominant tone of this portrait is one of reticence, which conforms with the increasing formality of court etiquette which she introduced into the English court in imitation of the Hapsburg courts.
