Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Beach at Posillipo, Naples, with Figures (said to be Horatio, Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton) walking along the Shore, by John Thomas Serres (London 1759 – London 1825). At left, cliffs with a villa on top, on beach below, a lady and a naval officer walking; three boatmen preparing a boat and putting down a gangplank; anchored in bay are a lanteen rigged vessel, the ‘Napoli’ and beyond, a warship; Naples and Vesuvius in the distance.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
