Summary
Oil painting on panel, Julius Caesar Roman Emperor (BC 100-44), after Antonio Tempesta. Equestrian figure against classical background: Caesar seated on a white and grey dappled prancing stallion, turned to left, left profile, with a baton in his right hand, wearing a green and gold scaly cuirass with a belt of hanging green and gold leather strips, lion’s head shoulder cover with hanging green and gold leather straps; a laurel circlet on his head tied at the back with flowing white ribbons, a scarlet cloak flies up behind him and he has a sword with a pink scabbard decorated with silver hanging from the left of his belt. A building with bricked-in arches and topped with a dome on the left and at the back various neo-classical towered and domed buildings. Erroneous label on frame 'Emperor Hadrian AD76 - AD138'. The correct identification was recognized by Mary Beard.

Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
