Summary
Oil painting on panel, Claudius, Roman Emperor (10 – 54 AD), after Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), 17th century. Equestrian figure against classical background: Claudius seated on a black and white horse caparisoned with a complete leopard skin, including the head; facing left, left profile, holding a lance or spear on his right shoulder with his right hand and a shield with a grotesque mask, on his left arm; wearing a scarlet tunic with a black cloak, his left leg exposed and revealing an open-toed buckskin sandal edged with white braid a ruined classical building in the left distance and foliage and trees on the right. Label on frame 'Emperor Claudius BC10-AD54'.

Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
