Summary
Oil painting on panel, Augustus, Roman Emperor (63 BC - AD 14), after Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630). Equestrian figure against a classical background: Augustus, seated on a horse, which is richly caparisoned in red and gold, turned three-quarters to left, gazing at spectator, a staff in his right hand which rests on his thigh, his left hand on his hip, dressed in a body-forming cuirass, a yellow cloak, lined with red, a helmet with plumes and open sandals; 18th century neo-classical building to left background, and a cloister in the right background. Erroneous label on frame: 'Emperor Caligula AD 12 - AD 41'. Mary Beard has pointed out the correct identification.
