Summary
A solid rosewood desk chair or corner chair, Portuguese, mid 18th century With a double pierced vase shaped back splat with central turned column, the shaped drop in seat above a deep carved frieze and acanthus carved cabriole legs and claw and ball feet. Inspired by English designs this example is distinctively Portuguese owing to the profusion of well defined shallow carving and the construction with exposed joints and unusual proportions. English merchants lived in Portugal during the 18th century thus providing the market for this type of chair.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
