Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady, possibly Miss White, British (English) School, circa 1740/50. A half-length portrait of a young woman, facing and wearing a white dress with lace collar and cuffs, with a nosegay of flowers at the bosom. The sleeves decorated with blue ribbon. Inscribed - Miss White by RA Dance...from Walter Savage Landor (inscribed on the back). Possibly the daughter of the tenants of Buckfast Abbey in the mid 18th century.
Provenance
Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963. Recorded on page 34 of the Sotheby's Inventory and Valuation of Benthall Hall dated July 1992.
