Summary
Oil painting on copper, At the Barber's, style of Frans Francken III (Antwerp 1607 - Antwerp 1667), 18th century. The interior of a barber's shop, two customers seated in the process of being shaved, group of figures to the right holding very large shears. Small dog curled up in front of an empty chair to centre. Back wall hung with flagons, pewter and scissors etc. Burrwood frame. Inscribed - HET DAGELYCZSCHEN AERBEYT WORT DEN COST GEVIST. MAER GROOTE SCHEIREN.BREGEN GELT INDE KIST (painted along base). [Daily work is done at the cost of success whereas the big shearers bring in the money] The picture is a joke or political attack on bankers, who were known as 'the big shearers'.
Provenance
Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
