Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Abigail Rudston, Mrs William Thornton, British (English) School, circa 1697. A half-length portrait of a young woman turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator and wearing a red dress over a white chemise with a gilt trimmed blue cloak over her right shoulder. On June 8, 1697, she married William Thornton, who died September 10, 1718, aged forty-nine years.
Provenance
Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992); bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983; accepted for ownership by the National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
