Summary
Large black glazed red earthenware baluster jug, on circular foot, sparrow beak spout, wide handle with pinched terminal. Cold enamelled with spray of pink carnations to front and back, inscription contained in scroll cartouche below spout. Inscribed - William and Catherine Onions, Near WELLINGTON (cold enamelled), The marriage of William Onions and Katherine Vickers took place at Wrockwardine, near Wellington, on 2nd February 1753 (hand written note on Benthall Hall notepaper kept inside jug). Made circa 1750 – 1775.
Provenance
Made in Ironbridge, Shropshire circa 1750 - 1775. Included on page 2 of the Inventory of Items On Loan To The National Trust For Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to the National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by the National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
