Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, 7 warps per cm, Verdure (fragment), Flemish, probably Antwerp or Oudenaarde, c. 1680-1710. A small section of verdure tapestry cut from a larger piece. There are trees in the distance and leaves and flowers in the foreground, and at the lower right there is the edge of some blue and white drapery.
Full description
The tapestry once formed the lower left hand corner of 500371.2, a ‘Verdure with Bacchic Figures’, which is displayed nearby in the Tapestry Dressing Room. The drapery at the lower right hand side is the remains of the figure cut off at the lower left of the larger tapestry. (Helen Wyld, 2010)
Provenance
At Lyme Park since at least 1929; placed on loan from the 3rd Lord Newton to the National Trust in 1958; given to the National Trust by the 5th Lord Newton and the Hon. David Legh in 1997.
