Summary
Lead, Pan One of a set of six lead statues depicting ancient Greek and Roman figures; original to the house. A statue depicting Pan, a male figure standing with his left arm by his side, head facing right. He is naked except for draped clothing covering his head and right side of his torso; his right elbow rests on a tree stump and his left holds a set of pipes to his mouth. The sculptor Andrew Carpenter came originally from the Netherlands or France and was first recorded in London in 1702. He worked in marble but produced a great number of outside sculptures in lead. H e had worked for John Nost the Elder as his principal assistant but set up a workshop specialising in lead sculptures near Hyde Park by 1714.
Provenance
Original to the house. This statue was either installed and supplied by Andrew Carpenter at the same time as the two on the East Front, which came to Lyme from London in 1732; or it was brought to Lyme by a wagon team from Bank Quay, nr Warrington, 25 miles away;
