Summary
Print, line engraving, Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury (1621-1683) (after Sir Peter Lely) by Jacobus Houbraken (Dordrecht 1698 - Amsterdam 1780). 1740. One of a set of ten engravings depicting notable seventeenth century figures. Half-length portrait, in an oval; body facing right. Man with a long curled wig, wearing a lace neck tie, breastplate and undershirt. Framed by a cartouche with a border of grass, a balustrade wall below with a cherub in front holding a sword; surrounded by draped fabric. Inscribed with 'ANTH. ASHLEY COOPER EARL OF SHAFTESBURY'.
