Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Chicheley, Mrs Richard Legh (1643-1728) by the Master J.H. (fl.1647-1666), 1662. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, turned to left, almost facing, gazing at the spectator, with dark curly hair dressed with short curled fringe, wearing pendant pearl earrings and single-strand pearl necklace, amber-coloured dress with low neckline worn off the shoulder with three-quarter-length sleeves slashed to reveal a very full white chemise, with buckled fasteners on the upper and lower sleeve, a blue-green shawl over her right arm, her left hand touching a small stone fountain with a standing putto pouring water from an urn on a circular bowl supported by dolphins. She stands against a balustrade with trees beyond, to the right a fluted column.
