Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Letitia Richmond (1734 - 1784) aged 24 by John Astley (1724 - 1787), 1758-1759. Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right gazing at the spectator. She has light brown hair dressed with pearls and black ribbon and she is wearing a black lace and pearl choker, with a rope of pearls falling down across her right shoulder to her bosom. She wears a blue dress with a low neckline, edged in blue trimming and lace, the sleeves having mauve-fringed pieces at the shoulders. A black, white and silver sash falls from her left shoulder and is tied at the bosom. Daughter of Reverend Legh Richmond and Mary Legh.
Provenance
This painting with eight others was presented by Sir Bruce Richmond (1871 – 1964) in 1959. All these portraits belonged to the Reverend Legh Richmond, grandson of Legh Richmond, the rector of Stockport and great grandfather of Sir Bruce who gave the pictures to the Trust for exhibition at Lyme. NT 499943 and NT 499944 passed to a younger son, whose daughter married the 10th Lord Belhaven and left the pictures to Sir Bruce Ingram, the remainder descended directly to this donor.
