Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Peter Legh IX (1563-1636), aged 68, British (English) School, 1631. A half-length portrait, turned very slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, with grey hair and beard, wearing a tight white jerkin with capped shoulders, embroidered with red leaves/antlers, poorly painted slashes, gorget, fine linen stiff collar and cuffs, edged with points; crimson breeches; gold belt with hanger and gold ceremonial sword. In his right hand he holds a baton, his left hand rests with his knuckles on his hip; steel helmet on table behind him at right. There is a version of this portrait, in stained glass, in the Drawing Room, dated 1634.
Provenance
This portrait of Peter Legh (IX) is of great historical value and interest to the collection at Lyme Hall. The painting has remained with the Legh family descendants and was loaned to the Lyme Hall by Peter Richard Legh, 4th Lord Newton (d.1992) in 1948.
