Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Reverend Legh Richmond (b.1709/10 - 1769) by John Astley (1724 - 1787), 1759. A painted oval half-length portrait of elderly man, turned slightly to the right, facing, gazing at the spectator, with a shoulder-length powdered wig, wearing black clerical dress and white linen clerical bands. Son of Sylvester Richmond and Frances Elizabeth Brooke, of Acton Grange.
Provenance
This painting with eight others was presented to the National Trust by Sir Bruce Richmond (1871 – 1964) in 1959. All these portraits belonged to the Reverend Legh Richmond, grandson of Legh Richmond, the rector of Stockport and great grandfather of Sir Bruce who gave the pictures to the Trust for exhibition at Lyme. NT 499943 and NT 499944 passed to a younger son, whose daughter married the 10th Lord Belhaven and left the pictures to Sir Bruce Ingram, the remainder descended directly to this donor.
