Summary
One of a pair of nineteenth century gilt-brass, or ormolu, oil lamps; this one with four lights. The lamp has a central urn decorated with male masques and garlands mounted on a gadrooned saucer-shaped body with foliate finial, from which four short straight branches emerge, decorated with acanthus beading and female heads. Chains attached to four handles, connect above to an eight-petal, circular flower-head. Converted to electricity, c.1903, with white 'flame' glass shades.
Provenance
Original to the House, this lamp can be seen in an early twentieth century photograph of the Bright Gallery (See 'Interiors' file). It was returned to Lyme in 1980 following its purchase by the Trust from Christopher Wrays.
