Summary
A walnut and walnut-veneered chest, English, circa 1700 - 1720, raised on stand NT 494508.2. The top veneered and with double feather-banding and cyma-moulded edge above two short and three graduated long drawers, all cross-banded and line-inlaid. With half-round mouldings between the drawers. The sides solid walnut. The drawer linings employing re-used 16th century linenfold panels for the drawer bottoms. With moulded base rail. The escutcheons replaced; the majority of the brass handles are replacements based on the surviving originals. The stand of a single long drawer and raised on five scrolling rectangular-section legs, joined by wavy stretchers and on bun feet. -- It has been noted that the solid walnut sides and drawers lined with re-used oak suggest that this is a provincial piece [Bowett].
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust in 1990.
