Summary
A painted window cornice, English, early 19th century, one of a set of three. With curved ends, edged with mouldings and painted with green and orange ribbons against an ochre ground. This cornice fitted with a red pelmet CAN/T/1c of box-plated wool applied to its lower edge with a flat weave braid and a deep wool fringe. It does not match the other two in the Tapestry Room and was probably originally fitted to the bed in the Spenser Room.
Provenance
Probably one of the '3...japanned cornices' recorded in the '3 step room' in 1819 and 1846, and still in place when the contents of Canons Ashby were auctioned on the 4th of July 1980 [Lot 346] when they were purchased by the National Trust.
