Summary
Oil painting on panel, Princess Elizabeth, Abbess of Hervorden (Herford) (1618-1680) by Gerrit van Honthorst (1590-1656). A head-and-shoulders portrait to left, with long black hair and pointed, black headdress, a gold and black embroidered dress with lace and pearl border, a, possibly, a staff in her right hand held across her body. She was the daughter of King Frederick I of Bohemia / Frederick V Elector Palatine (1596-1632) and Queen Elizabeth (1596-1662) the daughter of James I but remained unmarried.
Provenance
Acquired at the auction of the Craven Collection at Sotheby's in 1968. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Ashdown House, 1968.
