Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Princess Henrietta Maria, Princess Palatine, Princess of Siebenbürgen, Transylvania (1626-1651) by Gerrit van Honthorst (1590-1656). A half-length portrait to right, right hand held forward, wearing dark red headdress with veil falling behind, olive green bodice edged with crimson border and lace, and crimson sleeves. Inscribed on the reverse with name of sitter. She was the daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and Elizabeth of Bohemia, her paternal grandparents were Frederick IV and of Louise Juliana of Nassau and maternal grandparents were James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark. She married, on 4 April 1651 in Sarospatak, Sigismund Rákóczi,(1622–1652), the son of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy and George I Rákóczi. She died on 18 September 1651 unexpectedly, her husband followed her to the grave a few months later, both were buried in St Michael's Church Gyulafehervar.

Provenance

Coombe Abbey, 1866, no. 187; Acquired at the auction of the Craven Collection at Sotheby's in 1968. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Ashdown House, 1968.
