Summary
Oil painting on panel, Prince Edward, Count Palatine (1625-1663) by Gerrit van Honthorst (1590-1656). Painted oval panel with decorated spandrels. A head-and-shoulders portrait, slightly right, head turned over right shoulder, with long black hair, wearing cuirass with a red cloak clasped at the right shoulder and gold epaulettes.
Provenance
Coombe Abbey, 1866 cat. no. 198 'Prince Edward in gilt armour and crimson'; Craven sale, Sotheby's, 27th November 1968, lot 46; Acquired at the auction of the Craven Collection at Sotheby's in 1968. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Ashdown House, 1968.
