Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir William Wyndham, 3rd Bt MP (1687-1740) on Horseback by Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1656 – London 1743) and John Wootton (Snittersfield c.1682 - London 1765), 1714. A three-quarter-length portrait right, wearing a blue coat and rose vest. At right, architecture with a tree and vase at left.
Provenance
Recorded at Petworth on 18 August 1828. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
