Summary
Oil painting on panel, River Scene by Salomon van Ruysdael (1600-1670), signed and dated on barrel: (?) R 1632 (Some damage on barrel where signature is placed) In the centre is a ferry boat with cattle and sailing boats can be seen in the right distance. There is a barrel in the right foreground. On the far bank are trees.
Provenance
Probably bought at Robert Bragge sale, Langford, 6-11 March 1748/49, 2nd day, lot 10 by Sir Charles Wyndham (1710-1763) before succeeding as 2nd Earl of Egremont for £8.8.0. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
