Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon.Charles James Fox MP (1749-1806) (after Sir Joshua Reynolds) by John Rising (1753 – London 1817), inscribed on the paper: A Bill for the Better Regulation... affairs of the (East India Company) Representation of the Commons...King, 1684.A three-quarter-length portrait, standing, his head three-quarters right, with his right hand resting on papers on a table, at left. He is wearing a dark blue coat and fawn vest with a red hanging behind him, and a pillar and sky at left. It is a copy after the original of 1782 in Holkham Hall, Norfolk and another copy by John Rising is at Hardwick Hall (NT).
Provenance
In the collection of the 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) by 1835. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
