Caption
Sir William Wyndham, 1st Bt. was the son of John Wyndham and Catherine Hopton, sister of Ralph, Lord Hopton of Witham. He was created a baronet by Charles II. His grandson was Sir William Wyndham, 3rd Bart., Chancellor of the Exchequer. There is no record of any autograph original of this picture.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir William Wyndham,1st Baronet Wyndham (1633-1683), studio of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), late 1670s. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing, turned three-quarters to the left and wearing a buff coat and white stock, his right hand is holding a baton, his left on his hip, against a rock and landscape background.
Provenance
In the collection of the 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710-1763) by the year of his death. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
