One of two early seventeenth-century full-lengths, the painting depicts the 6th Duke of Somerset’s grandfather The two portraits were on the south wall of Gibbons’ original smaller Carved Room, facing Closterman’s portraits of the 6th Duke and Duchess.

Full-length portrait, standing, full face, with his right hand on a green covered table, the left at his sword hilt; he is wearing a dark red dress and mantle, with rose hose and white shoes with gold lace rosettes; the background is dark with a green carpet.
Provenance
In the collection of the 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710-1763) at his death. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
