Summary
Oil painting on canvas, George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney KB (1737-1806) by Sir Joshua Reynolds (Plympton 1723 - London 1792). 1764. Painted oval. Half-length portrait, of a young man, with his head turned three-quarters to the left. He is wearing powdered hair, a green coat with gold frogging and a white stock.
Provenance
Painted for the sitter. Bought by the 3rd Earl of Egremont on 13th June 1823 at the Watson Taylor Sale, lot 49, for £35.14s. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
