Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Winter Scene, Skating by Aart van der Neer (Amsterdam 1603 – Amsterdam 1677), signed: A.V.N. (monogram) [now barely visible – bottom left (?) – and dubious] - mid 17th century. A frozen canal with nets, baskets, pots and fourteen figures across the foregound. In the centre are hockey players with boats against the left bank. There is a church with a spire, and three with square towers, receding along the left bank to the centre distance. A mill is on the right bank, mid-distance; with a horse-sleigh in the nearer foreground.

Bought in Mrs A. Farquhar’s sale [not in Lugt] on 11 October 1837, lot 24; recorded at No.4, Grosvenor Place, in 1847 as A. van Meulen and at Petworth in 1856; thence by descent; on loan from the Egremont Private Collection
