Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Arthur Hopton (c.1588-1649/50), follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), after original of 1636/8. A half-length portrait, of red-bearded grey-haired man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, dressed in black with a black cloak with a large soft linen collar and cuff, his right hand showing, index finger pointing down. A copy of a previously lost picture by Van Dyck (in Lely’s posthumous sale) and rediscovered at Sotheby’s, 9 April 1997, lot 16; and acquired by a private collector. Hopton was available to sit for the original of this portrait when he was in England, between April 1636 and April 1638.
