Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Battle of the Nile, 1st August, 1798 by John Thomas Serres (London 1759 – London 1825). Nelson destroyed the French fleet under Admiral Brueys at the Battle of the Nile in Aboukir Bay on 1 August 1798. The battle began in the evening and ended at midnight. L'Orient caught fire at 9.30 pm and blew up at 10pm. At left can be seen a frigate, dark against the glow.
