Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Allegory of Marriage (in Honour of Alfonso d'Avalos, Marchese del Pescara and del Vasto (Guasto) (1502 - 64) in 1523), after Titian (Pieve di Cadore 1488/90 - Venice 1576), 18th century. The union of the man dressed in the armour of Mars and the woman dressed as Venus is witnessed by Love, Hymen and Fertility. A copy of a painting by Titian in the Louvre which was owned by Charles I and of which a copy by Michael Cross (Miguel de la Cruz) was included in the 1666 inventory. There is a watercolour miniature, after Peter Oliver - of which the original by him is also in the Royal Collection - by David de Granges, signed and dated 1640, at Ham House (NT 1140216).
