Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King Henry VII (1457–1509), Queen Elizabeth (of York) (1466–1503), King Henry VIII (1491-1547), Queen Jane Seymour (1509 –1537) and King Edward VI (1537–1553) as Prince of Wales (after Hans Holbein the younger and Scrots) by Remigius van Leemput (Antwerp 1607 – London 1675), inscribed: Anno Domini 1547. Aetatis Suae 10. Remigius van Leemput fecit. Anno Domini 1669. This is a copy by Remigius van Leemput of the destroyed fresco which was painted by Hans Holbein the younger in 1667 for the Palace of Westminster but destroyed by fire in 1698. Remigius van Leemput, born in Antwerp; called Remee or Remy was a copyist of Van Dyck, Lely and the Old Masters. He was in England before the Restoration and died in London. Charles II commissioned van Leemput to make a copy of the original fresco in 1667, which is now at Hampton Court. This Petworth copy (discovered by Mr Ernest Law in 1897) differs from that in introducing Edward VI and not having the inscriptions. Holbein's cartoon for the left half of the fresco is at Chatsworth.
