Caption
Kneller was the leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries and was court painter to British monarchs from Charles II to George I. The Percy heiress, Lady Elizabeth Percy was the daughter of the 11th and last Earl of Northumberland, whose fortune paid for the rebuilding of Petworth House by her husband.

Oil painting on canvas. Lady Elizabeth Percy, Duchess of Somerset (1667-1722) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), signed and dated: G.KNELLER 1713. A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, seated, turned slightly to the right, head inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, her brown hair is brushed back with a single tress on her right shoulder, she is wearing a silver white dress with a red mantle which is ermine lined, her left arm is resting on a table covered in a green velvet cloth on which sits her coronet.
