Summary
Oil painting on panel, King Edward IV (1442–1483), British (English) School, 1560-1620. Inscribed across top: EDWARDVS IIII ANGLIA REX. A half-length portrait of a man, turned three-quarters to right, gazing to the right, clean-shaven, wearing a brocaded cloth-of-gold over-robe revealing a black under-shirt with four strings of pearls, each hung with a pendant jewel he holds a ring between the tips of his fingers and wears a jewelled brooch with a pendant pearl in his black cap. A copy of an original painting in the Royal Collection (RCIN 403435) which dendrochronological (tree-ring) analysis has dated to between1524 and 1556.
Provenance
In the collection of the 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) by 1835. By descent to the current Lord Egremont. On loan from the Egremont Private Collection
