Oil painting on canvas, James 'Ossian' Macpherson MP (1736-1796) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 1772. A half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, looking to the left, with brown hair, plum coat, and a green and gold striped waistcoat. He has a roll of paper in his right hand.

Appointments – probably for sittings, and for James rather than the (later) Sir John Macpherson: 8th, 11th, 15th, 18th June, 17th July, & October 8th, 1772; a payment of 35 guineas, 11th September 1773; ? given by the sitter to Caleb Whitefoord (1734-1810); Caleb Whitefoord’s posthumous sale, Christie’s, 5th May 1810, lot 74, bought by George O’Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) and thence by descent to the current Lord Egremont. On loan from the Egremont Private Collection
