Summary
Oil painting on canvas, a portrait of Etheldred Hyde née Gerrard (d.c.1693) Mrs Edward Hyde, of West Hatch, Wiltshire. Attributed to Gerard Soest (Soest c.1600 – London 1681), circa 1650-55. A half-length portrait of Etheldred Hyde, née Wynter (d.c.1693), turned to the left, wearing a brown dress with full sleeves and low neckline, a pearl necklace, and earrings. A coat of arms is visible in the top left corner. Etheldred was Mary Wynter’s aunt. She was the sister of Mary’s mother Frances Gerrard, Mrs John Wynter (d.1691). Etheldred married Edward Hyde (d.1669) who was a cousin of Lord Chancellor Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1609-74). The earl was a highly significant figure, whose daughter Anne (1637-71) married the Duke of York, later James II and mother to queens Mary II and Anne. There is a letter in the Dyrham archive from Edward Hyde writing to John Wynter (Mary’s father) calling him ‘brother’ (dated c.1665).
