Caption
This is a mid-seventeenth-century adaptation of Van Dyck’s portrait of 'Charles I on Horseback with M. de St Antoine' in the Royal Collection, dated 1633. Pierre Antoine Bourdin, Seigneur de St Antoine, who is omitted from the painting at Dyrham, was King Charles I’s riding master and equerry. The Dyrham portrait was purchased by William I Blathwayt (?1649–1717) from his uncle, Thomas Povey (1613/14–c.1705), in 1693. In the list of pictures sold to Blathwayt, the portrait was described as a 'large peece of King Charles the 1st on horseback.'
