Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Flemish Woman, 1619, by an artist working in the manner of Frans Pourbus the younger (Antwerp 1569 - Paris 1622). A three-quarter-length portrait of an unknown Flemish woman, standing, turned slightly to the left, facing the viewer, dressed in a black surcoat with a white-and-gold embroidered bodice, white ruff, and white trimmings at the wrist. A gold chatelaine is around her waist, the end of which is held in her left hand, while her right hand rests on the arm of a red-and-gold upholstered chair to the left. A coat of arms is visible in the top left: lozenge argent with diamonds gules.

Possibly purchased by William I Blathwayt (?1649-1717) from Thomas Povey (1613/14-c.1705); thence by descent; purchased by Colnaghi for the National Trust from the sale of paintings from Dyrham Park at Sotheby's, 29 February 1956, lot 87.
